Two centuries of social & ceremonial life at the Irish courtChampagne & Silver Buckles: The Viceregal Court At Dublin Castle 1700-1922 by lecturer and social historian Joseph Robins is a serious and fascinating study spanning two centuries of social and ceremonial life at the Irish court. Thoroughly researched and drawn from a wealth of primary sources ranging from diaries and newspapers to genealogical and domestic records, Champagne & Silver Buckles is a fascinating, informative, very highly recommended glimpse into the upper-crust side of Irish history and a welcome, invaluable contribution to Irish History supplemental reading lists and academic reference collections.

Chaos Theory and James Joyce's Everyman (Florida James Joyce Series)
Published in Hardcover by University Press of Florida (November, 1999)
Average review score:

University Press of Florida; info@upf.comIn a helpful, lucent introductory chapter, Mackey (Univ. of South Carolina) makes intelligible--even to the nonphilosopher--the distinction between classical mechanics and postmodernism and the role of chaos theory in mediating between the two. According to Mackey, philosophers from Aristotle to Einstein have viewed nature as a machine--deterministic, evolving through a chain of cause and effect, potentially knowable, and governed by the laws of logic. By contrast, postmodernism views life, and language, as and ultimately unreal. To find a middle ground, Mackey turns to chaos theory, which "accepts the indeterminateness and interrelationships emphasized in postmodernism yet affirms the existence of an aboriginal reality." In a dense and insightful analysis of Ulysses, Mackey applies this theory to the life of Leopold Bloom, finding him at the end of the book a man who has been left stronger and more hopeful by the trivial and accidental events of the day, but no less uncertain about his future. Equipped with endnotes, this book will serve upper-division undergraduates through faculty.

Charming Small Hotel Guide Ireland (Charming Small Hotel Guides)
Published in Paperback by Hunter Publishing, Inc. (July, 2000)
Average review score:

Great book! This 'charming' series sparkles with photographs that stress the beauty of the finest - but not necessarily the costliest - small hotels across Europe (by country). Most hotels get a full page with a clear, revealing photograph, one or two beautifully written descriptive paragraphs and a shaded section with contact info, prices, etc. (Library Journal)

Charming Small Hotel Guides: Britain (Charming Small Hotel Guides)
Published in Paperback by Hunter Publishing, Inc. (April, 1997)
Average review score:

Excellent book for those that love unusual hotelsI first came across the '92 version of this book and have had many years of excellent use out of it. The updated 97 version was found by accident in a local book store.
The new version has been updated somewhat though sadly with the omission of an interesting Abbey in Wales. It does however still retain a captivating selection of unusual Hotels to stay in.
What seperates this book from crowd for me is the simple yet accurate descriptions of the Hotels. I have given it to many a visiting friend to help enhance their journey across this green and pleasant land.
Highly recommended.

Children of Lir: Stories from Ireland
Published in Hardcover by George Braziller (August, 1981)
Average review score:

A Pleasant First ReviewThis story was a rather good one to me, the way a typical story should go, a bad guy, the helpless first victims, the at first clueless good guy but then he always destroys the evil one. And that is exactly how it goes with the evil step mother (Aoife) jealous of how much time her new husband (King Lir) spends with his kids instead of her so he turns her into swans! But that is all I can tell you, I don't want to ruin the ending but let me say I think they need a NEW ending.

Choose Ireland, 2nd : Travel, Investment, and Living Opportunities for Every Budget
Published in Paperback by Globe Pequot Pr (01 November, 2001)
Average review score:

Not just for retirementThinking of moving to Ireland for a few years, I have found this book helpful organizing the important steps to a successful extended stay there. Especially important to me were topics regarding cost of living, what sort of services I would miss, how I would deal with money issues and where the interesting sights are found. All of this is covered well. The book is made more enjoyable by it's inclusion of historical and cultural information. This book is packed with stuff that I couldn't find in any other books.

Christianity in Ireland: Revisiting the Story
Published in Hardcover by Columba Press (May, 2003)
Average review score:

All the characteristics of a great bookThis book, edited by Daire Keogh and including a chapter he wrote, is fantastic. It not only exhibits all the characteristics of a comprehensive history of the Catholic Church in Ireland, it also has all of the notable characteristics of a great crime novel: memorable characters, suspense, and even cautionary tales of all-too-human struggles. I strongly recommend this book not only for what it has to say about the history of christianity and Catholicism in Ireland, but because its style is so unique and suspensful that readers will be left wondering "Whodunnit?"

Clans and Families of Ireland and Scotland: An Ethnography of the Gael, A.D. 500-1750
Published in Paperback by Willow Bend Books (January, 1989)
Average review score:

What a find! What pleasure from this book! I live in USA and meet lots of people with Scottish or Irish backgrounds. They are just thrilled to read about their heritage. Personally, I have always wondered about my own surname - now the mystery has been solved. You know, it's a real gift to discover your roots!

Classic British Knits: 40 Traditional Patterns from England, Scotland and Ireland
Published in Hardcover by Random House (October, 1988)
Average review score:

Pattern Knitters' Heaven! The sweater patterns in this book are divided by type of knitting; Shetland lace, 'fisherman' (Aran) patterns, and Fairisle (complex color patterns). This is an older book, so patterns are presented 'row-by-row' (K2, inc 1, P2, etc) rather than in graphs. Clear color photos show the detail of each sweater and the instructions are well presented. I've referred to this book over and over; it's a constant source of inspiration.
